A Guide to the Latest Technology

With advancements being made at such a rapid rate we can all be forgiven for getting a bit out of touch with current technology. From digital cameras to 3D TVs there is a lot of technology for us to get our heads round, and it is only going to continue expanding.
The problem is that new technology seems to develop all at once and it is now hard to remember a time when we didn't all speak in terms of megapixels and screen resolutions. In order to stay up to date we have compiled a quick guide to the latest technology, focusing on the 3D TV and the new technological developments surrounding digital cameras.
3D TV
Ever since the 3D phenomenon hit the cinema we all knew it was only a matter of time before it infiltrated our homes. The current television market is therefore now a minefield of letter abbreviations. From HD to 3D there is a lot to learn.
Put in simple terms a HD television, or High Definition television is one which offers a better picture quality based on the type of screen display and resolution. TVs which are said to have "full HD" are those marketed and labelled as HD1080P.
3D televisions are sets which enable the viewing of three dimensional images whilst at your home. They work on a similar principle to that in cinemas and require homeowners to wear 3D Active glasses whilst viewing.
A number of 3D televisions have become available on the market over previous months by a number of well known manufacturers, including Panasonic 3D TVs.
Digital Cameras
The world of digital cameras has also evolved over recent years and most manufacturers now offer a range of different cameras which are targeted to different groups. Digital SLR cameras (or DSLRs) are aimed more at the amateur professional whilst compact digital cameras are more for the generic user.
Some of the best and most well known ranges of digital camera on the market are the Panasonic Lumix and Kodak Easyshare ranges. These cameras are aimed at the typical user and contain typical features such as good levels of optical zoom and a high quantity of megapixels.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 Compact Digital Camera, for example, has a resolution of 14.1megapixels and 16x optical zoom. With a 3" LCD Touchscreen and an impressively extensive list of shoot modes and functions, the DMC-TZ20 is a great camera that offers features and style.
Similarly, the Kodak Easyshare M552 Compact Digital Camera has a resolution of 14megapixels and a slightly smaller optical zoom of 5x. With a screen size of 2.7" LCD and the capability to film HD video, this camera is still a great little model. Its best feature is in Kodak's Easyshare technology. The easy to operate camera is enhanced by this ability to quickly and easily share photos to social networks and emails via the Kodak Share Button.

Tweet Mirror causes a stir at London shopping centre

A new tweet mirror has been installed in London's Westfield centre and is causing a stir amongst shoppers. If you saw Mary Portas' recent Mystery Shopper series then you might know what a tweet mirror is as she introduced one to a bedraggled Pilot store to try and add a bit of glamour. The tweet mirror is the latest gadget that has evolved from the social networking revolution and will no doubt be very soon found in shops up and down the country.
The Tweet mirror is a gigantic photographic mirror that is placed in retail store changing rooms. It allows you to take a picture of yourself wearing your possible purchases and then upload it to twitter or Facebook for your friends to see and give their opinions. You can also use the mirror to view the pictures of yourself from various angles that you wouldn't be able see in standard changing cubicle mirrors. Have two dresses you love but only enough money for one? Use the tweet mirror to compare the dresses by displaying the pictures side by side. Hold on, cameras in changing rooms I hear some of you cry! Don't worry, the mirror is usually placed in the changing area lobby so that no unauthorised or intrusive snaps and shot and shared.
The Tweet mirror received mixed reactions at the launch. More mature ladies were still puzzling over Twitter itself, never mind a device that allows you to share pictures to the social networking platform. Teenagers loved the chance to pose in front of the glam gadget and then share their pics with their mates!

Council faces fine over missing USB stick

A missing USB stick that contained medical and security details of vulnerable people in Leicester has been found in a lunch carrier bag.
The stick belonged to a service called Leicester Care, which is part of Leicester City Council who help to look after vulnerable and elderly residents. Resident's key safe codes were on the stick, these are used to access a box on the outside of a resident's property that contains a key to the door. These all had to be changed when the USB went missing. There was also medical data about certain residents on the stick that could have proved very dangerous and awkward if compromised.
After weeks of being lost the USB stick was found in a plastic carrier bag that was used to hold an employee's lunch. As soon as it was discovered it was tested in order to ascertain if it had been accessed by a third party. Tests came back negative, meaning that the stick had not been used since it disappearance. All of the data on the device was encrypted and hard to read but still should not have been treated in a lax manner. Councils and businesses nationwide are being hit hard on data protection issues at the moment and all are having to step up their security protocol. The employee to whom the bag belonged is being interviewed as part of the council's investigation into the matter.
The Information Commissioners Office has also started their own investigation and if the council is found to have been remiss in any way they could face a huge fine.

Android now more popular than iPhone

New research by YouGov which was released today shows that Android phones are now more popular amoungst Brits than iPhones.
They surveyed 2000 people in this latest poll which showed that 28% of smartphone users had Android operating systems. This is compared to 26% of users having iPhones and 14% having Blackberry's. Only 5% of those surveyed had a Windows Phone. This 28% of Android users equates to over 4 million people, a lot of whom are young professionals.
The survey also looked into popular Apps. 34% of Android users rated route planners and maps as part of their top-three favourite apps. This percentage was lower amongst other platform users.
The general feeling is that Android will become more widely used when it is available on more reasonably priced handsets. These survey results will no doubt be a boost for Google though, who are launching a new range of tablet devices to rival the iPad and iPad2 later this year.
These findings must come as no surprise to either iPhone or Andorid makers as earlier this year, Tesco Mobile reported that Andorid devices has outsold iPhones for February 2011. They said that the two platforms were even in January but even that was a slip for the iPhone as last year it was selling at double the rate of Andoirds.
With Apple set to release iPhone 5 in the summer of this year, we may find that Android sales slip back to previous levels. Young professionals like to have the latest must have phone and as they make up a large chunk of the Android following we may see some allegiance switching.

Digital assets lost if not recorded in a will

Remember A Charity commissioned the 'Dying in digital age' report which has found that millions of pounds worth of digital assets are being lost because people are not recording them in their wills. Another barrier will executors are facing is that of digital assets being protected by passwords that die with their owners.
Online music collections and bank accounts are at the heart of this study with many relatives reporting that they cannot access these services once their loved ones had departed. The study of 2000 people found that four out of five people owned some sort of digital assets. However, only 9% of those owners had thought about how to safeguard them for relatives should the unthinkable happen. 10% of those interviewed said that they believed their digital music collection to be worth over 1000 pounds.
The UKs digital music collection as a whole is worth a whopping 900m pounds, some of which is being lost on a regular basis due to family bereavement. As well as things with a monetary value there is also the sentimental value of other things stored online like family photos and videos which are priceless.
The Director of Remember A Charirty, Rob Cope said "this report shows that we should all take a moment to think about our digital footprint and who we will pass it on to". The charity commissioned the report to raise awareness about the importance of protecting digital assets for the future and to ask people to consider leaving a gift to charity when the time comes.

McAfee research finds hackers target corporate information

Well known security company McAfee has carried out research into cybercrime and hacking and found that some hackers are starting to specialise in stealing corporate data.
McAfee found that some people were making deals on trade secrets and data given out to third parties. They have strongly urged all businesses to know exactly who it is who is processing and looking after their data. This comes as more and more information is being stored by third party and cloud hosting systems.
Such things as marketing strategies and research and development reports are reported to be most targeted. It is believed that certain business information is accessed by default when hackers send in viruses in order to attain credit card details and other payment type information. The difference now is that there is a growing market for this once overlooked data.
McAfee said they found that many businesses did not protect themselves well enough against such attacks. They said many companies were not censoring information passed via email or stored on company computers and they were thus making themselves easy targets for online thieves.
McAfee's chief technology officer for Europe said that "thefts of intellectual property or key documents could be hard to detect as you may not even know it is stolen as thieves just take a copy of it". He also attributed the rise of such thefts to mobile technology, saying that workers were able to access delicate information on the move away from the restrictions and safety of the workplace.

Waitrose online shopping site is disaster

The posh supermarket chain, owned by the John Lewis partnership, spent a whopping 10m pounds on designing and creating a new online shopping site which was launched two weeks ago. However, all is not going according to plan for the grocery giants as customers have complained about the slow speed of the site and its complicated usability.
Waitrose online have apologised to its customers, many of whom are now switching allegiance to Tesco and Asda, saying that the overall speed of the site was being worked on "as a matter of urgency". It was promised that the new site would be quicker and easier to navigate but customers have found that this simply is not the case and they are expressing their disappointment in the stores online forum.
One of the main issues is with the 'shopping lists', a function that is essential for repeat customers. They are shown a list of items they have previously purchased and given the option to add them to their basket again, without having to search through the online aisles to find them. Customers have complained that this function is now more of a hindrance than a help as the lists are displayed randomly and over far too many pages.
Another criticism of the site, made by a number of online bloggers and website analysts is that the site does not work properly in Google Chrome. Chrome is one of the world's fastest growing browsers and will, no doubt, be used by a large number of Waitrose customers.
There will always be a number of complaints whenever a new website is launched. People like what they know and know what they like, as the old saying goes. However, it does seem that there are a number of nuts and bolts issues that need fixing in this instance.

3 Baftas for Heavy Rain

Arty PS3 game Heavy Rain reigned supreme at the Baftas computer game awards, which were held last night. The murder mystery style game follows the lives of four people including a FBI Officer and Journalist, who are trying to track down the notorious 'Origami Killer'. It won the award for best story, best original music and best technical innovation.
Despite picking up these three prestigious awards it was Mass Effect 2 that won the title of best game. The family award went to Kinect Sport, a device which sold 10 million units in the first four month of sale.
This year's awards saw the emergence of a new category – Best social network game. This was won by My Empire, a roman city building game that is popular on Facebook. Driving game, F1 2010 won the Sports Bafta for its 'realistic simulation of the 2010 Formula One Championship'.
The iconic Call of Cuty: Black Ops did not walk away empty handed. It won The Game Award of 2010 as voted for by the public. This is the 3rd consecutive win in this category for the Call of Duty franchise.
The most anticipated award of the evening was of course the Bafta Fellowship which was awarded to Peter Molyneux. He is the man behind such games as Magic Carpet, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper and Powermonger. In his speech, My Molyneux said "I still think that one day I'm going to wake up and all of this will have been a dream".

Ofcom Imposes Cuts On Mobile Phone Charges

Everyone knows that it is much more expensive to call someone on a different mobile phone network than you. However things now look set to change. Ofcom want to see termination charges lowered from over 4p to less than 1p. Termination charges are what network providers charge for connecting your call from your network to their network.
These cuts will be implemented in stages. The first stage being launched on the 1st April will mean that the termination charge will go down to 2.66p for the major operators O2, Vodaphone, 3 and Everything Everywhere. Ofcom have insisted that these savings are to be completely passed on to the customer by 2015.
Smaller mobile phone operators will really benefit from this shake up as they will be able to offer more competitive pricing structures. Ofcom regulators are saying that though mobile phone companies will 'lose money from the reduction in charges' they are easily making it back by 'earning more revenues from the rapid growth of data services, such as text messaging'.
It is not only mobile phone users that will benefit but also landline callers. These lower termination rates will help to greatly reduce the cost of landline calls that are being made to a mobile phone. So there is now hope for the many people who avoid making landline calls to mobile numbers, they may be able to do so in the future without receiving an enormous bill. Communications companies such as BT have welcomed the move and hope that their customers will see savings 'in the near future'.

Kinect achieves Guinness World Record

It has today been announced that the Microsoft Kinect is now the fastest selling consumer electronics device on record accord to Guinness World Records. There have been more than 10 million sales of the device since its launch in November 2010.
Both the iPad and iPhone's initial sales figures were greatly surpassed by the Kinect, much to Microsoft's delight we are sure! On average Microsoft were selling 133,333 units per day for the first 60 days of being on sale. This means that approximately 8million Kinect devices were sold in this period compared to 2million iPads in the same period after they launched. This 8million is more than twice what Microsoft projected at the outset.
The Kinect is an add-on for the Xbox 360 console. It is an infrared camera that tracks the user's body movements. It allows the user to control and interact with the console without the need to touch a game controller. The success of the Nintendo Wii has revolutionised gaming, the Kinect was developed by Microsoft in response to this. Sony has also done something similar with their PlayStation Move.
Gaz Davies , the Editor of Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer's Edition said: "The sales figures here speak for themselves. We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector.
The success of the Kinect has caused Microsoft to think about developing it further. They now have plans to bring the Kinect technology to the Windows PC.
