Honda due to stop car production in India

The Honda Motor Co. are set to cut their car production from May at their factory in Northern India. This is a result of some of their parts suppliers in Japan have still not fully resumed their operations after the earthquake and tsunami which occurred on March 11th have forced them to close facilities.
The Indian units source some of their engine and electronic parts from Japan, Jnaneswar Sen, the vice president of marketing at Honda Siel Cars India Ltd., stated that although they are still assessing the level of the impact the quake in Japan will have on their production, the output is going to be impacted in May.
The huge 9.0 earthquake struck Japan last month, and triggered a subsequent tsunami which forced a halt in the production process of all car makers in the country and therefore created shortages of parts from the suppliers in the quake-stricken areas.
Mr Sen further said that Honda Siel is attempting to minimize the level of impact on their production by sourcing the motor parts from other vendors of Honda. Honda Siel currently buys most of their imported auto parts from Thailand.
Honda Siel are 99.9% owned by Honda Motor and 0.1% by India's Siel Ltd. They produce the Jazz hatchback and the City, Civic and Accord sedans at their plant at Greater Noida. The factory has an installed capacity to manufacture 100,000 cars per years, which works out at around 8,300 cars per month. However, they are currently only making approximately 5,000 cars per month. The company have another factory at Alwar in North-western Rajasthan state where they produce engine components such as connecting rods and crank shifts for the Jazz and City models.
The earthquake is predicted to affect vehicle production in India as the local units of numerous Japanese car makers, including Suzuki Motor Corp., Toyota Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co., buy critical motor parts from the East Asian Country. However, Honda is the first Japanese company to announce an impact as a direct result of the quake.

Ever thought of buying your second hand motor from Tesco

Well the rumours have been confirmed, Tesco are set to become the very first general retailer to branch out into the used car market with a brand new buying website. The giant supermarket chain who already take one in every seven pounds spent by the average British shopper, have launched their new site which offers internet-only services for purchasing second hand cars.
Their move into the 24 billion pound motor market broke on Friday when Carsite removed all the cars from their own website after Tesco bought a substantial proportion in the online dealership. It was only January when Tesco launched a further site called tescotyres.com who may be going head to head with some of the most established car dealers in the UK, but it states that it will be able to offer much lower prices by keeping costs down.
The new site is reported to have detailed pictures of each of their available vehicles including evidence of any scrapes, dents and/or damage. Each car will also have a full history report and fuel usage details.
However, the down side is that Tesco Cars will not allow the customers a chance to test drive the vehicle they are planning on buying, but instead will provide an online video of the car being tested by an employee. In order to put their potential buyers at ease, Tesco Cars have said that they will be performing strict vetting processes, including a 167 point mechanical inspection by the RAC and that each car will come with a one month RAC warranty. In addition to this they have also claimed that they will be advertising up to 3,000 cars per week, all sourced from hire and lease fleets, which means that a detailed service history and a majority of one-registered-keeper motors can be expected.
As an extra incentive, Tesco are rewarding each customer of Tesco Cars with 2,000 Tesco Clubcard points with any motor that they buy. In addition to this the retailer will also offer a 7 day money back guarantee for any buyers who are not 100% happy with their purchase. However, unlike many second hand car providers Tesco Cars will not allow their potential customers to negotiate on the price which is listed in the site.
The chief executive of retailing services at Tesco, Andrew Higginson, said that buy supplying directly to their customers thy have eliminated the idle man, expensive showrooms and salespeople working on commission. He went on to say that there is no pressure or hard sell for the customer to fend off. It is simple and easy for the consumer to select and buy their motor from the comfort of their own home, just like they can with their weekly shop, and the car will even be delivered to your front door along with their bread and milk!
Sir Trevor Chinn who is the chairman of both Carsite and Tesco Cars added that the customers want to know they can trust and rely on the information which they are being given about the used car, that they are getting value for money and that they experience good customer service. He said that it is also important for the customer to be able to take their time to make the right choice for them and that with Tesco Cars they are delivering a innovative experience for today's car buyer.

Grant achieved for innovative engine idea

Ultramo, is a small UK business who are in the process of developing an engine which they claim is going to offer twice the fuel efficiency of the conventional engines we are used to.

This new unit is targeted at off-highway and stationary power applications. The Ultramo, which stands for Ultra Large Temperature Ratio Motor, is said to have the possibility to produce thermal efficiency of 60%, which is approximately double that of a conventional engine technology as they reduce the majority of heat losses, in addition to reducing running costs. The technology is predicted to reduce the CO2 emissions by 50% and offer an estimated 8dBA reduction of noise, which is a key factor in achieving the future EU 5 emissions standard.

The UK company have stated that the engine is able to run on any combustible fuel and therefore can employ sustainable as well as carbon-neutral fuels as they are becoming more and more readily available.

The development of the engine is starting to proceed further, as the Haywards Heath-based business has recently received a large grant of approximately 90,000 pounds from the South East England Development Agency otherwise known as SEEDA. This money is going to allow Ultramo to fund the progression of a prototype engine.

This internal combustion engine is going to have the potential to be able to half the CO2 output within mechanical applications as well as achieving the thermal efficiency of 60% which is double that of the current engines we use today.
"We've already invited 17 leading engine, chemical and materials specialists to evaluate our technology. They have all agreed that our theory is based on sound thermodynamics and presents an original solution to the process of converting fuel into power," said Chrissi Wilkins, managing director, Ultramo. "This grant has made a big difference in helping us to develop a working prototype. The ULTRaMo engine has the potential to be the biggest breakthrough the industry has seen since 1876 when Otto built the first practical four-stroke internal combustion engine."

How to keep young drivers safe on the road

As soon as you turn 17 all you want to do is get your own driving license, however, where as we see it as our ticket to freedom, parents are often terrified to let them loose on the road. And when you see the statistics it's no surprise.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor accidents are the biggest killer of children and teenagers rather than any illness or disease. It also stated that drivers at the age of 16 to 19 are four times more likely to crash than drivers at an older age. However, the worst statistic was that when a teen driver only has one passenger in the car their risk of crashing increases by 40% and with two friends in the car this is doubled, compared to if the teen is driving alone.

Because teen drivers do not have the same driving experience as older drivers and therefore may not be able to control their car as easily also, especially when travelling at high speeds. Young drivers are also far more likely to take chances and feel over confident thus overestimating their abilities, as well as being vulnerable to peer pressure. Additionally, the common mood swings which hit teens are also prone to affect their driving, all of which can contribute to a motor accident.

So, how can parents work with teen to help them stay safe on the road and reduce their chance of having an accident?

The best was for this to happen is if young drivers and parents work together. It is suggested by the National Safety Council (NSC) that a parent/teen driving agreement is drawn up which should set very clear expectations for both the parents and the young driver to agree to. Such things which should be defined are the driving privileges of both parties like getting to use the family car on weekends and Friday nights, driving restrictions such as being home by a certain time and what the teen should do to prove to their parents that they are ready to drive e.g. showing responsibility etc.

It is also important that teen drivers are fully aware of the dangers of the road and exactly how their driving ability can be altered as a result of driving when tired, after having a drink, after an argument or after having taken drugs. They should also have a very clear understanding of the law and the consequences of their actions should they be tempted to break the law.

If all these issues are address and understood then young drivers should be a lot safer on the road, with less chance of having a motor accident and parents should be far less worried.

The UK is willing to pay more for electric motors

A brand new survey has discovered that drivers in the UK are more willing to fork out a premium for electric car technology compared to drivers in other countries in Europe and the news has come as Nissan increases the price of its Leaf electric car by 1,990 pounds.
The study was conducted by Deloitte, a global manufacturing group, who surveyed a total of 4.760 Europeans from 11 different countries. They found that just 16% would be among the 'potential first movers' to convert from traditional cars to electric vehicles (EVs). But is it did find that UK drivers who were within that 16% stated that they were far more willing to pay a premium for electric motors in contrast to people from other countries.
The survey also revealed that 53% of the individuals asked said they would be willing to consider purchasing an electric car and the remaining 31% claimed that it was very unlikely that they would consider buying an electric motor.
The Global Automotive Sector Leader for Deloitte, Craig Giffi, said that there are a number of factors which limit the acceptance of electric cars and currently these range from charging duration and the price of electric cars which is limiting the market. He further added that the 'Mass adoption of electric vehicles will be significantly influenced by a number of factors, including rising fuel prices, advancements in internal combustion engine vehicles, and the availability of government incentives'.
Although the interest in battery electric vehicles is growing the current offerings available on the market do not meet expectations of the consumers with regards to their driving range, charging time and the purchasing price. As a result of this it has been estimated that only 1-2% of consumers will actually adopt battery electric motors by 2020.
The survey was not only able to highlight the current limitations of electric run cars but also identified the expectations of consumers should they switch to EVs.
As the cost of electric cars was one of the most detrimental factors in the popularity of EVs, the news that car production company Nissan has raised the price of the Leaf by 2,000 pounds reflects the premium which is currently attached to electric cars. This price increase started on March 1st because of the depreciation of the English pound against the Yen.
As a result the price has now increased to 25,990 pounds after the 5k pounds Government Plug-In Car Grant; however orders which were placed before March 1st will remain at the original 24,000 pounds price.
Nissan have stated that as a result of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan on Friday, production at all of their factories has stopped until it has completely assessed the damage sustained to the factories, equipment and parts suppliers.

Car makers attempt to woo female customers

Just a few days after Rahul Verman bought Ford Motor Company's Figo, a selection of people dropped in unannounced at his Gurgaon home on a Saturday morning. The group of people, which included four Japanese employees from the rival Nissan Motor Co. Ltd, were wanting to meet his wife Ragini.
Sofue is a manager of attractiveness creation group for women at Nissan's customer-orientated engineering department. Sofue's job is to convince the female members of families to purchase a Nissan and give them feedback to make the company's models far more desirable for women.
Car makers, like Nissan, are making the effort to attempt to understand the needs and desires of women in India, highlighting the women's growing role in the buying of high-value items such as cars and homes, which were traditionally decisions made by male members of the family.
This change has come about due to the rising education levels for women and their ability to be able to pursue a career, allowing women more purchasing power.
"When it comes to spending money, traditionally women have had little opportunity as they were expected to manage the household budget rather than play any role in house- or car-buying decisions," said Sharad Sarin, a marketing professor at Xavier Labour Research Institute, Jamshedpur, and an expert on consumer behaviour. "Today, that is changing. Globalization, liberalization and a growing emphasis on education have helped to raise the status of women in a family."
Educations in Indian women and their economic independence has made them far more assertive regarding their choices and more than ever, female engineers and designers are influencing the outcome of cars to help make them more women-friendly.
Across the world, women count for approximately 40-40% of vehicle consumers, however in Indian this percentage drops. There are probably no more than 15-20% female drivers and the majority of these live in metro cities. So although paying attention to the female segment of the market it not a new idea, it is acquiring more and more importance.
Because of this, car makers are starting to design their vehicle models with women at the forefront of their mind. So far, cars are predominantly designed and developed for US and European markets and then sold in India they fail to factor that Indian women are shorter than their Western counterparts.
"Hardly anybody pays attention over the height of the seat or the size of the bonnet," said Sarin. "So, there is a definite market in that segment. In the future, I am sure more and more car makers will pay attention to that."
Sofue and many others like her are leading the way in changing the design of models, making them more comfortable for women in a market where the passenger vehicle production is expected to grow more and more, reaching 9 million units a year by 2020, according to government estimates. "I am responsible for the products to be attractive for female customers," said Sofue in an emailed response to a query. "I am specialized to analyse the difference of male/female from physical, behavioural and mental aspects and to plan the product specifications to be attractive for female customers."

Hope that new models will boost pick up sales

Three brand new pickup truck models are being introduced this year with the hope that they will fuel competition within the local automobile market's most vital sector in Asia
Ford is beginning to launch a brand new Ranger, the first pickup to be built under the 'One Ford' global strategy. This very compact little pickup made its worldwide debut last year at the Australian International Motor Show which took place in Sydney and is set to be launched officially in Asia in the 32nd Bangkok International Motor Show at Impact Muang Thong Thani later this month.
General Motors will also be revealing a sneak peek at their brand new pickup model, the Chevrolet Colorado prior to the opening of the motor show which will take place on March 25th.
Also, Mazda will be showing their all-new version of the BT-50 pickup in the works. It displayed a prototype in Sydney also late last year and are aiming to have a production model available in Thailand within the next few months of 2011 and all three new pickups will be built in Thailand.
The Ford Motor Co have said that their new Ranger had been comprehensively redesigned and developed in Australia for worldwide sales. Thailand will be one of three global hubs for exporting the new truck to an approximate 180 markets, with the production beginning later this year at the AutoAlliance Thailand plant in Rayong.
"The Asean region with Thailand as our production hub is a key opportunity within our Asia-Pacific and Africa growth strategy, so leveraging the Bangkok show for the Asean unveiling is the natural thing to do," said Peter Fleet, president of Ford Asean.
General Motors said it selected Thailand as the launch site for their new Colorado because of the popularity of pickup trucks as well as the growing importance of the Thai market to Chevrolet. Pickup sales accounted for the 43% of all the motors sold in Thailand last year.
"Trucks play a key role in most Southeast Asian markets," said Martin Apfel, president of GM Thailand and Southeast Asia and Chevrolet Sales Thailand. "Nowhere is this more evident than Thailand where trucks like the Colorado are ingrained in the local lifestyle."

Launch of the new Lamborghini

There were many highlights at the Geneva Motor Show last week and one of them was the launch of the brand new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 model. The new car is modelled on a carbon fibre composite monocoque which brings together light-weight engineering with the highest levels of stiffness and safety possible.
Just some of the features of the Aventador LP 700-4 include a new 12 cylinder 6.5 litre engine which offers 515kW/700 hp, a dry weight of a mere 1575 kg, which gives the motor a weight to power ratio of 2.25kg/hp, a 0-100km/h acceleration of 2.9 seconds as well as a top speed of 350km/h and finallm/h acceleration of 2.9 seconds as well as a top speed of 350km/h and finally a fuel consumption and CO2 emissions reduction of around 20% compared with its predecessor, despite an 8% increase in power.
The overall length of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 is 4.78 m and a width of 2.26 m which includes the exterior mirrors and is only 1.136mm high. Both of the car doors are made of carbon fibre monocoque and open upwards. This feature was introduced in the Countach and was then used for following V12 models such as the Diablo and Murcielago.
This new Lamborghini has a complete monocoque, which means the entire occupant cell, including the tub and roof is only one single component, which ensures complete rigidity as well as outstanding driving precision. In addition to this there is also a high level of passive safety for both the driver and the passenger.
The monocoque is attached at the front and rear with sturdy aluminium sub-frames, on which the suspension, engine and transmission are all mounted also. The carbon composite monocoque, with the front and rear frames feature a somewhat impressive combination of torsional stiffness of 35,000 Newton metres per degree and only weighs 229.5kg.
Lamborghini have chosen from three main carbon fibre reinforced plastic manufacturing methods, depending upon the requirements of the individual components of the car. They have patented the resin transfer moulding process 'RTM Lambo' - whereby the mould is not a heavy complex metal piece but is instead made from lightweight carbon fibre parts. This makes the production process faster, more flexible and more efficient. Also, the RTM Lambo process is a low injection pressure which does not require expensive equipment.
Lamborghini have said that one advancement it has realised if the ability to use pre-assembled monocoque components as the mould for the next step in the process. It allows for far simpler manufacturing processes when compared to conventional methods.

Motor Trend Car of Year Present by Chevrolet Dealer

A Fort Worth Chevrolet dealer, Classic Chevrolet, have happily announced that the 2011 Chevy Volt has been named as the Motor Trend's Car of the Year, which is one of the most prestigious awards among the many well respected awards within the motor industry.
Classic Chevrolet, which is a leading Fort Worth Chevrolet dealer, is offering the new 2011 Chevy Volt. The 2011 Chevy Volt was recently named the Motor Trend Car of the Year for 2010 and is one of the more revolutionary cars now available on the market as well as being one of the most efficient hybrid vehicles on the market also.
Motor Trend Magazine, who have been in operation since 1949, stated that this year's Car of the Year choice was 'the most significant' of car awards in recent years. The vehicle is set to be a breakthrough in the automobile community, as it provides an affordable alternative to the gas guzzling motors as well as giving the feel of a traditional automobile to Fort Worth Chevrolet shoppers.

The Motor Trend employs six separate criteria when judging the vehicles for their Car of the Year Award. Within these six criteria are design, engineering, safety, efficiency, value as well as how well the vehicle fulfills its intended function. The esteemed award is one of the highest honours within the motor industry and acts to further demonstrate the high quality of Chevrolet cars.
The Chevrolet Volt in Fort Worth
Shoppers at Fort Worth Chevrolet can appreciate the Volt for its incredible efficiency as well as the tiny carbon footprint on the environment. The primary breakthrough of the 2011 Volt is that it has lower costs and has increased efficiency in the electrical operation, which is something that no other hybrid is able to offer at the moment.
After testing the vehicle, Motor Trend were impressed with the fuel economy of the engine, which was 72.9 miles per gallon. Additionally, the testing also revealed that the Volt was cheaper to operate than other hybrids if the battery was charged every 80 miles.
There are many features for consumers to look forward to, the main one being the 2011 Volt's battery. The vehicle boasts a gas-free and emissions-free commute, which can be done through inserting $1.50 of electricity in the car before use. The Lithium-ion battery cells are able to hold more electricity than the common nickel cells in use on hybrids, saving money as well as increasing efficiency.
One of the most impressive things about the 2011 Chevy Volt is the advanced technology it features. Two LCD screens located on the dashboard allow drivers to see the current batter levels as well as telling them about other vital sections of the car. The Volt is also set to offer a phone application, called Volt mobile app, which is able to tell you all the important info about your specific Volt. So if you want to check your tire or battery levels, remote lock/unlock the car, you will be able to do it via your app.
So, not only is the 2011 Chevy Volt one of the most efficient cars on the market, it has also been voted as the best of the year.
